COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS: What is a family resource center?

    Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

Many Humboldt County residents are served by a special type of organization that goes by various names. Whether named a community center, resource center, Healthy Start or other name, they share common functions: They connect individuals with services, partner with programs and services to bring them to communities, focus on strong, healthy families and serve community identified needs and opportunities.

Many of these organizations belong to the Healthy Start, Schools Communities Partnership, a network of community- and school-based organizations working to improve child, family and community health and well-being. The Bridgeville Community Center is one of a dozen organizations currently belonging to the consortium.

Who uses the networks services? Here are a few examples:

    * New parents looking for a place for their toddler to have social and educational activities and for them to network with other young parents.

    * A senior seeking companionship, a good meal, social activity or an exercise class.

    * A low-income single parent trying to provide nutritious meals for his or her children.

    * A parent seeking support in coping with a challenging home situation.

    * A mother needing warm winter clothes for her kids.

    * Job seekers without a fast Internet connection at home.

    * Teens looking for fun group activities together.

The Bridgeville Community Center is a nonprofit that relies on grants and donations to continue operating.
