Testimonials from the IBC2011 Leaders’ Summit”The discussion and lively debate at the inaugural Leaders’ Summit was excellent and to the point. IBC is not only a place where you can debate leadership and innovation – it is where you can shape it for the future. As a speaker, I had the chance to meet and network with peers and delegates across EMEA who found the summit sessions both timely and compelling. This whole experience was invaluable”

Gary Shapiro, President and CEO, Consumer Electronics Association

“Thank you for the opportunity to speak at the IBC’s inaugural Leader’s Summit. It was a great pleasure for Yahoo! to be at the IBC once more. I particularly enjoyed the Leaders’ Summit, and the subject of my panel was of particular relevance given that week’s events at Yahoo! The event was phenomenally well run, the hospitality and welcome I received from the IBC team was incredible. I hope that either I or Yahoo! has the opportunity to be involved again in future years.”

Rich Riley, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, EMEA, Yahoo!

“The Leaders’ Summit was a great forum for discussion of some of the key topics that are affecting media businesses today. The format encouraged genuine debate around digital disruption and how increased interdependency between content, technology, consumer insights and audience/user participation affect business models and ultimately our way forward as media businesses. The quality of the panels and the intimate setting made this event both interesting and insightful.”

Giorgio Stock, Executive Vice, President and Managing Director, Disney Channels, Gaming, Online, Music and Publishing, The Walt Disney Company EMEA

JESSICA van VONDEREN: The story of Mary Poppins has very close ties with regional Queensland. Author PL Travers was born in Maryborough. The musical has proved an overwhelming success at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre in Brisbane, and audiences have been able to learn about the author at an exhibition there.

(FOOTAGE OF MARY POPPINS DRESS)

CHRISTOPHER SMITH, EXHIBITION CURATOR: It was wonderful to learn that the creator of a character as well loved and as well known as Mary Poppins was actually not only an Australian but a Queenslander born in Maryborough. Her father was a bank manager. So she and her mother and her two sisters, she had two sisters which you dont hear about very often, spent their very earliest years in Maryborough. So they were there for about I think for about four or five years and then there some changes in their circumstances and they ended up in Allora for a period of time as well. So she spent quite few of her earliest childhood years in Queensland and I think thats reflected in the book. Because I think the resourcefulness that she needed to develop living in those sort of environments and particularly when they moved to Allora it was very open there was a sense of the sky, the star, Im sure that that had a real influence on the why the stars are important in the stories theyre a constant element because skies in outback Queensland are just blazing with them. And when we learnt that the Mary Poppins musical was coming here it seemed a fortuitous match that we could tell the story of PL Travers the writer and the character of Mary who sort of almost is an alto ego I think for Pamela and then to show how the character developed from the book to the film and then eventually into this live musical show.

(FOOTAGE OF MARY POPPINS THE MUSICAL)

CHRISTOPHER SMITH: We were fortunate that we managed to arrange a loan from th4e State Library of New South Wales where the PLTravers literary collection is held. And what I wanted was pieces that actually showed the hand of the author. So things that shed written on, drafts for things, comments that shed made. Theres a wonderful copy of the shooting script for the film which they, she managed to get sort of first refusal I suppose on the details of the script so shes actually written comments about it saying Mary wouldnt do this or I dont think thats correct. And theres drafts of stories for her later works.

(MORE FOOTAGE OF COSTUMES OF MARY POPPINS)

CHRISTOPHER SMITH: The costumes weve got here are from the Australian production. Were very fortunate in that over the period of two plus years that the shows been running inevitably the costumes have to be remade. Casts change, costumes get a bit worn sometimes but they have multiples as well because they get a lot of wear and tear on stage so we were able to negotiate with the company to borrow some of the extra costumes. For instance there are two costumes here worn by Mrs Banks the mother because the actress played in Brisbane is different from the actress playing in Sydney and Melbourne. So they had to remake them so we were fortunate we got to have some of the original costumes.

(MORE FOOTAGE OF MARY POPPINS THE MUSICAL)

CHRISTOPHER SMITH: If any childrens books survives two or three generations I think its destined to be a long term classic and Mary Poppins has certainly done that.

Waste Connections Inc. is leaving town on a high note.

The trash hauler and recycler, making its last annual report that will include earnings amassed from its Folsom headquarters, on Tuesday reported record revenue of $1.51 billion in 2011.

It was the fourth straight year that the company surpassed the $1 billion threshold. Its 2011 revenue was up 14.1 percent over 2010.

Waste Connections is in the process of finalizing its move to its new headquarters in The Woodlands, Texas, just outside Houston.

WCI reported an annual profit of $165.2 million, or $1.45 per share, compared with 2010 net income of $135.1 million, or $1.16 a share. Fourth-quarter net income was $38 million, or 34 cents per share, up from $36.1 million, or 31 cents per share, in the last quarter of 2010.

Better-than-expected pricing growth in the (fourth) quarter, increased special waste volumes and tight cost controls helped cushion the impact of a 30 percent decline in recycled fiber values during the first half of the fourth quarter, said Ron Mittelstaedt, chairman and CEO.

Mittelstaedt also noted that 2011 acquisitions #x96; WCI has a long history of acquiring companies in comparatively small markets, where it has exclusive rights to provide services #x96; resulted in about $200 million in added annual revenue.

We believe acquisition activity could remain strong over the next few years. #x85; Our focus on exclusive and secondary markets and our disciplined deployment of capital will continue to guide us in navigating through these potential opportunities.

The company projects another record revenue year in 2012, with a forecast of $1.61 billion.

WCI announced in December that it was moving to Texas.

Mittelstaedt had warned in August that he was growing increasingly frustrated with he considered Californias dysfunctional business/political environment.

The Folsom office of WCI employed about 120; Mittelstaedt has said that about 20 will remain in the area.

He previously estimated that the firm generates about $80 million to $100 million a year in direct salaries, payroll taxes, payments to vendors and outside contractors, and other local expenditures.

Founded in 1997, Waste Connections has more than 2 million residential, commercial and industrial customers in 29 states.

In just under two years BranchOut has grown to become the largest professional network on Facebook with millions of users in more than 60 countries and 15 languages.  BranchOut users leverage their Facebook friend network to find jobs, source sales leads, recruit talent, and strengthen relationships with professional contacts.  BranchOut also operates the largest job board on Facebook with over three million jobs and 20,000 internships.  BranchOut’s enterprise products help recruiters and hiring managers source talent more effectively.  BranchOut’s social job posts are easily shared on Facebook and Twitter, and display inside connections right in the job post.

The company has revealed today that a recent growth spurt has amassed a total of 10 million active users, and 300 million connections on the network since launching in July 2010.  And over the last two months alone the site has gained an average of two new users per second.

“By being built on the Facebook platform, we are able to reach hundreds of millions of users. Jobseekers now realize that networking with close friends and family for professional purposes is successful and necessary. Thus, we’ve seen tremendous growth over the last two months, which we expect to continue in the future.” – Rick Marini, CEO and founder of BranchOut

I have read where some are trying to downplay BranchOuts reported numbers by saying that theyre not exactly comparing apples to oranges since BranchOut only has about 10 million members who have actually signed on and created accounts compared to LinkedIns membership of 135 million.  Quite frankly that argument doesnt compare apples to oranges, since BranchOut has only been around for less than two years.  Thats like trying to compare Derrek Rose of the Chicago Bulls to Michael Jordan.

Theres no way of knowing where BranchOut will end up, just like theres no way of knowing if Derrek Rose will end up breaking all of Jordans records, but I look forward to seeing where both of them end up a decade from now.  If they both keep tearing it up like this, it will be fun to watch.

Nice job BranchOut, pretty impressive if you ask me.

Livewire Connections completed the supply and installation of a complete satellite communications and IT network onboard the new 70m MY Talisman C, which was successfully launched and delivered in autumn 2011 on time and within budget.

Talisman C was built at Proteksan Turquoise Yachts in Turkey and Livewire Connections was contracted to provide all satellite communications, TVRO and IT network equipment following on from a good relationship spanning a 5 year period with the owners previous yacht.

Having designed and built Talisman C (Project NB-53) for world cruising it was essential to have equipment and systems onboard that were able to deliver robust and reliable connectivity anywhere in the world. For this very reason Talisman C is equipped with the very latest Sea Tel VSAT systems allowing the Captain, Owner and Guests to enjoy internet access, email and voice communications around the globe.

Livewire Connections installed two Sea Tel 6004 TVRO systems with an arbitrator to eliminate mast blockage and two Sea Tel 6009 VSAT systems with the latest dual antenna arbitrator to allow a single modem to operate efficiently with two antennas. The larger Tom Cecil, Livewire Connections Project Manager for the build process said, This installation project has gone extremely smoothly with excellent co-operation with the shipyard and owners build team. It is very pleasing to see all the hard work and effort result in such an elegant and well equipped yacht.

This care and attention to detail is all part of the turnkey satellite and communications services Livewire Connections offers its customers on a daily basis.

1.5m antennas provide the extra gain required for yachts exploring remote parts of the world to ensure a good connection is maintained even on the edge of satellite coverage.

Even when VSAT service is unavailable Talisman C can simply select a variety of back-up communications via the Livewire Access Controller FB-10, which then provides access to the internet via Inmarsat Fleet Broadband, 3G, shore connection or port Wi-Fi. The Access Controller FB-10 also allows the vessel to manage the internet bandwidth by dynamically prioritising owners and guests over the crew as well as monitoring each users throughput to ensure the connection is not unnecessarily abused.

Talisman C was fitted with the latest Dell PowerEdge and PowerVault Servers running a full domain environment with Livewire Mail and a managed internal WLAN system allowing users to seamlessly roam with their laptops, iPads and iPods around the yacht without losing internet connectivity.

Livewire Connections undertook the complete equipment installation with a team of dedicated inhouse engineers and a Project Manager throughout the design and build phase. By working closely with both the shipyard and the owners team to ensure the project was delivered to specification and on time. All works including design drawings, cable terminations and hardware installation and antenna commissioning were performed by Livewire Connections engineers.

From the start of the project to the finish, Livewire Connections have been very competent and successful at the design and installation of our onboard IT and VSAT communications. We have not been without internet since the day we launched and the owners are extremely happy. Captain Chris Russell, MY Talisman C

Ill admit it, Ive been known to get lost for hour long gaps in the Missed Connections section of Craigslist. Not to toot my own horn, but Ive also been an MC a couple of times.

Apparently Im not the only one that considers those little online declarations of love and longing a guilty pleasure, one Brooklyn-based childrens book illustrator has taken them to heart and canvas and put together a book of real Missed Connections illustrated.

If this lil video doesnt get you into the lovey-dovey Valentines spirit, you may be doomed to the Casual Encounters section.

Have YOU ever been a Missed Connection? Did you follow up? How did it all work out? Id love to hear some of your horror stories. Sound off in the comments section below!
