Therapy animals are not service animals

    Monday, June 3rd, 2013

Oregon law prohibits all animals, except for service animals, in grocery stores, restaurants, and other food establishments.  A service animal is a dog or miniature horse that is individually trained to do work or perform specific tasks for people with disabilities.

Therapy animals, comfort animals, companion animals and other classifications of pets may be important in the lives of their owners, but they are not service animals as defined in the Americans with Disabilities Act, and they are banned from food establishments by law.  Proprietors of these establishments face stiff penalties if they allow entry to these animals.

All types of animals, other than service animals, may also be banned from other private businesses open to the public (including libraries, retail stores, etc.), with the possible exception of certain classifications of federally subsidized housing.

Heartwarming (and Heartbreaking) Stories of Tornado Victims and Their Animals

    Sunday, June 2nd, 2013

In addition to the tragic loss of life and widespread damage to homes and businesses, the tornadoes that hit Oklahoma this week have also taken a heavy toll on the areas animals. Thousands of local residents have pets that were killed or lost, possibly forever, while livestock and even wild animals have also been affected by the storm. The Orr Family Farm, a local horse farm, took a direct hit to its stables that may have killed as many as 100 of their horses. For them, the animals are more than justcompanions, theyre a business and a familys livelihood. A website has already been set up to help reunite lost pets with their owners.

Obviously, the deaths of dogs and cats cant compare to the human lives that were lost, but for pet owners the loss of animalcompanions is very real and still very painful. On the flip side, in times of trouble when youve just lost your home and all your possessions having a pet by your side is sometimes the only thing that can comfort you. And for animal lovers in general, its just tough to see helpless creatures that are hurt or scared, and occasionally abandoned in the chaos that follows disaster.

Meanwhile, few things lift peoples spirits as much as seeing owners reunitedwith their pets. Rescuers were even heard on TV breaking out in applause after pulling a dog from damaged home on Monday.

As a reporter fortheJersusalem Postfound out last fall, while doing an animal story in the midst of the Gaza war, some people find it insensitiveto write about animals when humans are suffering. In the end, however, these stories arent about the animals, but about the people who cared for them.

One moment in particular managed to perfectly capture the incredible emotions animal stories create in times like these. In this CBS News interview, a local Moore woman is sadly telling a reporter about how shes lost her dog, until halfway through the interview, a miracle happens…

If that video doesnt move you even a little bit, then youre probably not much of a human at all.

Pasco woman cited, charged with abandoning 53 animals in a U-Haul in Spring …

    Friday, May 31st, 2013

SPRING HILL — Authorities believe Frances Terry Evans thought she could fool Pasco County code enforcement officials by hiding a truck full of cats and dogs in Spring Hill. But her plan was foiled, and Evans now faces 53 counts of animal cruelty and has been cited for 53 counts of animal abandonment.

Evans, 52, packed 50 cats in plastic containers with air holes drilled in the sides and three dogs into the back of a U-Haul truck and attempted to hide them behind the Publix store at Mariner Boulevard and County Line Road on Tuesday afternoon.

The subject of an ongoing investigation into animal hoarding in Pasco, Evans planned to return for the animals after code enforcement officers conducted a scheduled compliance check of her home. But a tip to code enforcement had officers waiting in the parking lot to see Evans drop off the truck, then ride off with her husband in a second car, said Carol Clarke, a Pasco zoning administrator.

Animals dumped after Campbell Co. shelter closed

    Friday, May 31st, 2013

(WBIR-Campbell Co.) Its been more than a month since a Campbell County animal shelter closed amid allegations that animals were improperly euthanized, but now, some residents said they are concerned because pets are being abandoned in their neighborhood.

The TBI has been conducting an investigation, and full-time employees at Adrion Baird Animal Shelter have been on paid administrative leave since April. David G. Young, the Deputy Mayor, said the shelter will remain closed until the investigation is complete.

You always have stray animals, but the numbers, I have never seen before like we have now, said James Slusher, a resident on Hiwasse Point.

Slusher said three dogs have been dumped on his street, one of which died of starvation. Nearby neighbor Laurie Carter has been taking care of the other two puppies, hoping to find them a permanent home.

I didnt want to see an animal starve to death, said Carter. Plus they were so cute.

Carter said the Norris Lake neighborhood saw animals being abandoned there before the shelter opened, and was not surprised that the closing of the shelter has resurfaced the problem.

We noticed we were seeing the dumping again. Were not the only ones seeing them being abandoned, either, said Carter.

The Deputy Mayor said the county has been getting similar calls since April.

They usually drop them off around the lake or in areas where they think people will find them and give them homes, said Young.

Young said the TBI has not released any information regarding its investigation, or an update on when the results will be available.

Since the shelter will not reopen until the investigation is complete, Young said the county has been receiving help from other agencies.

Were getting some help from Anderson county, were taking animals to Knox County, said Young. The City of Lafollette has an animal control officer who handles bite dogs or nuisance animals

Young reiterated the county is moving as fast as it can, but neighbors like Slusher want the shelter to reopen, regardless of whether the director, Betty Crumley, is found at fault.

Theyre dropping them off in the neighborhood, and of course, being humane people, we see them in their plight and trying to take care of as many as we can, but theyre getting killed or starving to death and its just something that I feel very strong about. We need have our animal shelter reopened, said Slusher.

A Youtube video that has gotten thousands of hits claimed dogs were put down too quickly and inhumanely. A 10News investigation found the shelter was not following recommended procedures or using the right dosage of euthanasia drugs.

The Campbell County Commission funds the shelter, but the director and Mayors Office run the facility.

Crumley has told 10News she had received death threats, and claims the pictures in the Youtube video are not pictures from the shelter.

Neighbors said they hope the TBI finishes its investigation quickly, and in the meantime, someone adopts the puppies permanently.

They do great outside but theyre going to be small animals, so they arent going to get real big based on what the vet said. If someone wants them in the house, they would be great lap dogs said Carter.

Carter can be reached at laurie.carter@hdrinc.com. She said she will send pictures to anyone wanting to adopt the dogs.

How To Help/Find OK Tornado Animals

    Wednesday, May 29th, 2013

While the cities are wrangling up the displaced animals, they are in desperate need of rescues and fosters to take care of the animals until the owners are found/matched up. If you have read this before, there is now an UPDATE under the Linens for Animals section(under the silly cars drawing). DRIVERS are urgently needed for a linens transport to help the animals (details below) starting on Friday, May 24.

In addition, they need tons of funds to help with fixing wounds, feeding and supplies.  Instead of trying to get in your car and driving up a load of food, it is being requested, that caring citizens donate funds not goods, so that the organizations can get exactly what they need as they need it.

All gifts countit doesnt matter how small.  If a million people each gave a dollar, what an impact youd have.  The problem is, that so may people know that there are needs but dont do anything. I cant explain why, I just know that is what happens. So, if you can give a little more to make up for all of those who dont, youll make a big difference.

These are also great resources to FIND a lost animal, too, so be sure to share this info.

Animals who were lucky enough to survive are following any one they can findjust to happily make contact with loving humans.  Lets help them surviveand get back to their families, even if they cant get back to their homes, yet. Home is where the heart is though, isnt it?  Thanks for caring. Really truly caring.

Do Your Part, a 501(c)(3) organization is also serving as a clearing house for information about ways to help and needs in the area for both humans and animals. They have a main Facebook page and one set up specifically for Moore, OK, https://www.facebook.com/MooreOKTornadoInfo.

The most effective way to help at this time is through donations. Please do not drive to Oklahoma to volunteer without first going through responding organizations

UPDATE: LFA has made contact with the OK City and Monroe, OK authorities and a giant order is heading to the Tornado Zone!!

    BUT

DRIVERS for a FRIDAY (May 24) TRANSPORT are NEEDED.

There are two pick-up locations in the Dallas area and then a drive north to bring them to two drop-off spots where the displaced animals are being kept until they can be reunited with their owners.

This would be an EXCELLENT chance to do goodwhether you live in Houston or Dallas or even in OKanywhere that you can drive to the Dallas area. Follow a friendand have a late lunch on the way back after the drop-offor join a caravan and make new friendsboth human and animal!  (Bring treats with you, too!) Hear the stories up close and personal about what happenedand if you have some room in your house/car on the way home, maybe you can foster/care for some animals.

Linens will need to be bagged at the donating facility and then driven up to both OK City and Monroe, OK.  You can do both or just a part of this transportbag and not drive, drive and not bag or do it allmany hands and cars/SUVs/Trucks are needed. The need, as youve all seen, is great.

Please email Lori ASAP TODAY: Lori@linensforanimals.org if you can help in ANY way.

    Thank you!

Living in vehicle, woman gives animals – including 23 cats – to Humane League

    Tuesday, May 28th, 2013

A woman has surrendered to Humane League of Lancaster County 23 cats and a dog that were living with her in an SUV.

She said she had recently lost her home and was staying in her vehicle, said Mary Wallick, Humane League spokeswoman. She came to us and was willing to do the best thing for her animals, and signed them over to us.

The animals, which included four kittens, were all fairly dehydrated when the woman turned them over Monday, Wallick said.

Two of the adult cats are being treated for severe upper respiratory infections. The kittens also are being treated for the same problem, as well as eye infections.

The dog, a Jack Russell mix named Jill, is being treated for fur loss and a skin infection from a severe flea allergy, and also will need dental work.

The animals were being held in two dog crates, with four to five cats in each crate; and 12 to 15 cat carriers, with one or two cats in each, inside the SUV, Wallick said.

The animals will be put up for adoption in a week or two, depending on their conditions, Wallick said.

Wallick said the situation was an example of animal hoarding, and was unusual because the animals were being kept in a vehicle.

After the woman signed over the animals, she left the Humane League. Wallick said she did not know where she went.

Pub 199, destroyed by fire, reopens Thursday

    Tuesday, May 28th, 2013

Much of the pub, which was known for its seafood and for numerous taxidermied
game animal heads mounted on the walls, burned despite fire departments
attempts to douse the blaze from the roof of the establishment using a
    ladder truck.

    Not
wanting to wait for insurance to pay out before rebuilding the pub, Markou began repair efforts right away and at his own expense,
demolishing the remains of the former restaurant so that crews could
    begin construction.

Since the fire, Markou said he had updated his fire suppression and
security system in the restaurant including a new sprinkler system.
Markou said he also expanded the pub from 7,000 square feet to 9,200 square
feet, and updated his electrical and heating systems.

Markou lost most of his game collection from his various hunts
and fishing expeditions from places such as Alaska, Brazil, New Zealand
and South Africa in the fire, but he said his
son supplied about half of the game animals in the main dining room.
Others were pulled out of storage, or purchased, Markou said.
